Chick peas are fun, flavorful, and nutritious. And since they are utilized in multiple cuisines, chick peas are a great way to play with your food.

Other than bearing a mildly amusing name, chick peas are one of the most versatile of the legume family. Otherwise known as garbanzo beans, chick peas are a nutrient-dense flavor powerhouse. Used in a wide variety of ethnic cuisines, the chick pea is typically used whole or ground into a flour. They are often used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines from curries to hummus to falafel. And in Italian cuisine you can find them in antipasto platters or simply pickled. The Philippines also have a dish called halo-halo, which utilizes the chick pea by cooking it in a syrupy mixture to create an unique desert.

Canned or Dried, Chick Peas are a Flavourful, Cheap Source of Protein and Fiber

You can purchase chick peas raw and proceed to soak and cook them, but there are plenty of perfectly good canned garbanzos to save some time. Just be sure to rinse and drain them well to remove the sticky, starchy liquid. Chick peas are a fabulous source of protein and fiber, and can add substantial texture to a dish. And it’s a great ingredient for vegetarians to make a more satisfying meal, while getting essential protein incorporated into their diet.

Quick Chick Pea Ideas

There are many ways to utilize the chick pea. Garbanzos have a great flavor on their own, but they can absorb and complement other flavors as well. They have a remarkable texture that lends itself to both hot and cold preparations. Whether they are cooked down in a sauce, pureed into a spread, or simply toasted – chick peas are an inexpensive and flavorful way to enhance your diet. Here are a few ideas to get you started with your own chick pea creations:

  1. Simply toss them with some spinach, bell peppers, tomatoes, olives, and feta cheese. Top off with a little aged balsamic vinegar and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and you have a quick, delicious, and healthy salad.
  2. Make a quick hummus by placing chick peas, lemon juice, chopped garlic, and olive oil in a food processor.
  3. Try putting chick peas in your next batch of vegetable or chicken soup for a filling alternative to rice or pasta.
  4. Mix with couscous and cucumbers, and toss with yogurt vinaigrette for a simple and light summer salad.
  5. Try toasting the chick peas for a few minutes in some olive oil over medium heat, then sprinkle with salt, pepper, and finely grated parmesan cheese for an easy side dish.
