Apple Varieties & Types – Nutritional Value

There are many different varieties of apples. What are the nutritional values of apples? Find out the taste and flavor of the most common type of apples.

There are hundreds of different types of apple varieties. There are even many varieties within a certain type of apple. For example there are probably more red delicious apple varieties than any other apple type. Apples all have the same basic nutritional values, so looking up a particular type or variety of apples is not necessary.

Nutritional Value of Apples

Single Medium Apple - 3” diameter, raw with skin (182 g)

  • Apples are low in calories with 95 in a medium sized apple
  • Apples have no fat content, but do have some sugars (19g)
  • Apples are Cholesterol free
  • Apples are loaded with Dietary Fiber with 4g
  • Apples are not a source of Protein with 0g
  • Apples are a good source of Vitamin C with 8.4mg, which is 14% of the daily value in a 2,000 calorie diet.

Apple Types and Varieties – Flavor, Color, Size and Uses

  • Red Delicious apples have a nice sweet and juicy flavor. They have a dark red skin and come in a variety of sizes from small to large. Red Delicious apples are great eaten raw, in salads and good for applesauce.
  • Gala apples have a sweet flavor. They have red and yellow mixed colors, come in sizes ranging from small to medium and have a thinner skin than most apples. Galas are good eaten raw, in salads and great for applesauce.
  • Granny Smith apples are very tart and sour. They have a bright green coloring and come in small and medium sizes. Granny Smith apples are best eaten raw.
  • Fuji apples have a very sweet flavor. They have yellow and green mixed colors and are usually on the larger side. The can be eaten raw, are great in salads and great for applesauce.
  • Pink Lady apples have a very sweet and unique flavor. The have a red and green coloring and the white flesh often has a slight pinkish tint. Pink Ladies are good eaten raw, in salads and are great for apple pie.
  • Rome apples are slightly sweet in flavoring. Rome apples are smooth, bright red and have a thick skin. They’re best used for baking and cooking. Not a good apple for applesauce or eaten raw.
  • McIntosh apples have a tart flavor. The have a red and green mixed color and are small to medium in size. McIntosh apples are good raw, for applesauce and cider and good for pies.

As the old saying goes, an apple a day will keep the doctor away. Apples have some amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids, also known as the good fat. In fact the only negative nutritional value is the amount of sugar in apples. The low calories, high amount of dietary fiber, zero fat content and high amounts of Vitamin C makes the apple a good choice in a balanced diet.
