Who doesn't love some good chocolate? Studies show there's even more to love in dark chocolate and Dr. David Macklin explains why.

If you find chocolate irresistible – you’re in good company. Apart from its rich, rewarding flavour, a lot of people enjoy the pleasurable, some say even sensual sensation it arouses. Thought to release serotonin in the brain, producing feelings of pleasure, chocolate is as good to give, as it is to receive. It’s no wonder that it’s one of the most consistently popular Valentine’s Day gifts around. Tasty and sexy yes, but that’s not where the chocolate story ends. There is increasing medical evidence that dark chocolate in particular is in fact good for us (for those who need yet another reason to enjoy!). Eat the right amount of dark chocolate and you can lower your blood pressure, relax your blood vessels and your insulin will work better, according to a recent trial published in the medical journal Hypertension.

These delicious benefits apply only to dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 50% or more. Why? Dr. David Macklin, weight care management expert and physician says “It’s due to the fact that the cocoa bean is rich in flavinoids – the same antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, tea and red wine. The higher the cocoa percentage, the higher the corresponding flavinoids levels and that’s good news for your heart, body and taste buds.” Eat a couple of squares of dark chocolate every day, and you could literally be keeping the doctor away! That’s good news for everyone who loves the dark stuff (like me!).

As with all good things, Dr. Macklin advises all of his patients to exercise moderation. “You cannot just add dark chocolate to your diet without taking something out. Chocolate, like olive oil, is a high calorie healthy food and portion size is critical. As part of a healthy diet that includes whole grains, vegetables, fruit, low fat dairy, lean protein and good fats however, dark chocolate is something delicious that you can enjoy and not feel guilty eating,” says Dr. Macklin.

And that’s good news for us all. If you’d like to order some special and sensational dark chocolate, check out the details of Vere chocolates from NYC and be amazed. Your valentine will thank you!
