Reishi, Maitake, and Shiitake Mushrooms are all healthy mushrooms that have been proven to fight cancer and sickness.

Yes, mushrooms are a fungus. We may put them in everything from spaghetti sauce to sushi, but an abundance of varieties have proven themselves to be more than just great tasting, they’re also great for your health.

Low in calories and high in zinc, protein, fibre, vitamins, and minerals, mushrooms have been proven to do great things for our bodies. Selenium found in mushrooms works to decrease the risk of the spread of cancer.

Recent studies have shown that mushrooms have probiotic properties—they help our bodies ward off sickness, increase resistance to disease, and help our bodies stay balanced. Most studies on mushrooms have been conducted in Asian countries such as China and Japan. Asian countries use mushrooms in natural remedies as well as medicinal recommendations.

Though there are over 38,000 different species of mushroom, three in particular have demonstrated healing properties. Reisihi, shiitake, and maitake mushrooms have been shown to boost the immune system. In some studies, these mushrooms have properties that have been linked to fighting cancer. Here’s what you need to know about them:

Reishi

Reishi mushrooms are good for those who have upper respiratory tract problems. These mushrooms have been shown to improve asthma symptoms. In Asia, reishi mushrooms have been used to treat liver problems, hypertension (high blood pressure), and arthritis.

Reishi can be taken in soups, syrups, teas, and even by injection. Talk to your doctor before starting a health regime that includes reishi mushrooms.

Shiitake

An amino-acid in shiitake mushrooms have been proven to help in the processing of cholesterol in the liver. As well, shiitake mushrooms appear to many researchers to be cancer fighters. Shiitake mushrooms help the body form antibodies that help fight disease and strengthen the body. Shiitake mushrooms contain about one third of the recommended daily intake of selenium.

Shiitake mushrooms are delicious and can be cooked. Shiitake mushrooms can be taken both in food and medicine form.

Maitake

Maitake mushrooms are best known for their cancer fighting properties. Studies have shown that maitake mushrooms are adept at blocking the spread of cancer, as well as boosting the immune system of those with cancer and without. In general, maitake mushrooms have been proven by researchers to lower blood cholesterol levels as well as help in stabilizing type 2 diabetes.

Maitake mushrooms, syrups, and drops are available at health food stores.

On their website, Mushrooms Canada suggests substituting mushrooms for meat in burgers, on pizza, and cheddar cheese for fewer calories.
