In this instalment, we continue our cross-country US look at the world of cocktail trends as seen through the eyes of master mixologist, Cameron Bogue. This time, Cameron finds himself in the land of the Big Easy, New Orleans.
Heading down Bourbon Street, the famed area claiming to be the birthplace of the cocktail, Cameron chose to look at the historic city’s roots for inspiration in coming up with this concotion. “I chose ingredients available in the 1800s (the cocktail’s inception), which included local bitters (an alcoholic solution of bitter, aromatic plants used in mixed drinks or as a mild tonic). I discovered the most famous of all New Orleans’ bitters and a bottle of Parfait Amour to use in my signature New Orleans Cocktail.”
Parfait Amour, or perfect love in French, a creamy, rose petal infused liqueur makes for an intriguing note in this seductive concoction.
1 oz Smirnoff Vodka
½ oz Parfait Amour
½ oz lemon juice
¼ oz simple syrup
1 dash of bitters
Mix all ingredients and stir (do not shake) till cold, strain into a martini or cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Now this is a nifty “Did You Know” compliments of the Cocktail Trend Report: Legend has it that a certain Antoine Amedie Peychaud, a local apothecary, added bitters and sugar to brandy and served it up in a coquetier (a French egg cup). This later translated to “Cocktail.”
From the Big Easy to the Big Apple, Cameron pays homage to the city’s moniker by using the fleshy fruit in his 6th Borough cocktail (pictured above). He says, “I decided to give a shout-out to the city’s nickname by integrating the all-American apple fruit into my cocktail creation.” This one's for you, New York.
1 oz Smirnoff Vodka
1 oz Hard Apple Cider
1 oz fresh pressed apple juice
½ oz simple syrup
½ oz lemon juice
Shake until well chilled, strain into a martini glass rimmed with pure maple sugar. Garnish with an apple slice.
As crisp as an autumn breeze, this cocktail is a top-shelf keeper. Join me in my final whirl-wind vicarious tour (or is that virtual in this case?) with Cameron as he heads to Seattle and his native Portland for more fabulous cocktail creations. Didn't catch the first instalment? Here's Cameron's hats off to Maui and Hollywood!
