For stick-to-your-ribs fare made with gusto, there's one stop when driving through the Annapolis Valley that you'll want to make for BBQ and the best breakfast around!

One of the highlights during a recent visit to Nova Scotia, in Canada’s East Coast, including driving through the province’s vineyard and produce growing area, the Annapolis Valley. A few incredible stops along the way ensued, including one at the entrepreneurial Scott Geddes’ Woodshire Inn in historic Windsor, NS (not Ontario where he’s originally from) where he runs and operates the Inn and Cocoa Pesto Bistro.

Best Breakfast Around

There, you can have one of the best breakfasts in the Valley- but be forewarned, you’ll want to come with your appetite and be ready for some seriously fulfilling fare. Ask for his lip-smacking pulled pork eggs Benny, with perfectly golden crisp hash browns and a pot of just-brewed coffee. There’s no better way to wake up! You can also get fluffy scrambled eggs, thyme scented pork sausage patties, those terrific hash browns and a bowl of the heartiest and tastiest beans around. This flavour-packed breakfast will keep you fuelled for hours! Promise!

Stick-to-Your-Ribs Ribs!

If you’re a savvy traveler (or a lucky local), what you’ll want to make sure you don’t miss is the “All You Can Eat Rib Mondays.” You see, Geddes is a southern BBQ fan- and that means he’s taken the time to learn all about wet and dry rubs, smoking, and perfecting the art of the Q. The man’s even taken to creating his own secret sauce- and no bother trying to pry it out of him- Geddes isn’t about to spill on what makes his spicy/vinegar laced, Southern style sauce so darned good.

On Mondays, his Applewood smoked, dry-rub pork ribs served with Geddes’ signature Cocoa Pesto sauce (yes, that secret sauce) is the stuff that BBQ dreams are made of. On these evenings, a generous amount of finger lickin’ ribs also comes with a heaping serving of hand cut fries and coleslaw (for a very reasonable $27.95 CDN a person). Geddes packed us off with some of his ribs and even at home, slowly heated in the oven and given a glistening coat of honey glaze BBQ sauce for the wet ribs (the dry ribs got his secret side sauce), everyone dined like we were in the American South.

The Perfect Retreat

If you plan on spending time in the valley and want a fabulous deal ($99 CDN per night for a double occupancy room when we inquired)- stay a night or two at The Woodshire Inn where Geddes’ renovated two spacious suites upstairs to give patrons the feel of Victorian Nova Scotia with every possible modern amenity. And with Cocoa Pesto Bistro downstairs, you’ve got a night of dining, good wine and fabulous food.

In the coming months, Geddes will be adding a jazz/wine bar at The Woodshire Inn, just to sweeten the deal. If you go, just don’t forget the pulled pork or ribs- it’s BBQ North– in the heart of Windsor, Nova Scotia!
