Secrets of Tulum: Pretty Tasty

I usually don’t write about hair and beauty, but upon discovering Secrets of Tulum's food-based beauty products (Chili Soy Shampoo, anyone?) I had to share the news.

I've heard of food ingredients doing double-duty in a host of products other than consumables, but I had never heard of a Chili + Soy shampoo. Secrets of Tulum is a Vancouver, B.C. based business that takes making environmentally responsible products seriously and dare I say, deliciously.

I must admit that a Chili + Soy "five alarm" shampoo sounded well, a bit alarming but my curiosity was piqued so off to the shower I went. My scaredy-catness stems from an unfortunate incident with red chilis one Valentine's Day dinner attempt, that left me melting ice cubes with two hands that felt like they were perpetually set alight (I know- I should have worn the darned gloves while chopping the bird's eye peppers!). Could chili and soy extracts stimulate my scalp and moisturize as promised?

With a hint of caution, I opened the bottle and took a whiff. I was instantly transported to a fresh, green meadow full of wild flowers, with just the subtlest spicy kick thrown in there for a little Mexican fire. Unlike many other shampoos and products touting flower-freshness, this one didn't smell synthetic or over-whelming. Let me just say my hair felt silky and smooth (and no hands or other body parts were burned during this experiment!). Using traditional Mexican recipes originally used by the Mayans, Secrets of Tulum has recaptured the ancient secrets and infused them with a modern-day soy boost.

If "hot sauce for your hair" isn't what you're after, the company also offers Cactus + Soy shampoo using nopal cactus to bring back your hair's shine and lustre, as well as Tomato + Soy that's "freshly picked for plump hair." The amino acids in this latest combination are said to pump up limp hair. And if all that washing has made you tired, lie back and light a Tulum Body Wax Massage Candle made of soya wax, shea butter, pure olive oil and essential oils. Thirty minutes later, the candle becomes your massage oil. Grab a friend (the special kind), light a candle and relax. So now you can say you're too busy washing your hair, and really mean it!
